The World Dithers while Iran Slithers

“Fresh estimates indicate that Tehran may be able to make a nuclear weapon in 2009.”

By Allan Erickson

It is curious, and sometimes chilling, the way events and information converge. At the moment I’m enjoying an excellent intrigue novel by Vince Flynn, “Protect and Defend.”  Flynn masterfully presents the threats posed by Iran and the possible drama yet to be played out on the world stage. Like Frederick Forsyth, Flynn engages deep research using excellent sources to reveal truth through fiction. In the course of reading “Protect and Defend,” we are made aware of MEK.

Mujahadeen-e-Khalq (MEK) (aka People’s Mujahedin of Iran or PMOI)

More on MEK and PMOI

“The U.S. State Department lists the Mujahadeen-e-Khalq as a terrorist organization for its association with Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi regime until the dictator’s ouster by the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. The MEK was blamed for Western targets in the 1970s and for supporting the 1979 American embassy takeover in Tehran. Over the last two decades, however, the group’s continued presence on the U.S. terrorist group list primarily involves its activities directed from Iraqi territory against Iran. After the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, the MEK was disarmed and confined by American forces to the grounds of a former Iraqi military base. Still, the 2007 State Department report says that MEK maintains the capacity and will to attack Europe, the Middle East, the United States, Canada, and beyond.”

Pages 115-116, “Protect and Defend”

“Have you ever heard of a group called the People’s Mujahedin of Iran? The PMOI? They’re a group that falls loosely under the control of the National Council of Resistance of Iran. It’s made up of dissidents of all different stripes. They live mostly in Europe. They’re scientists, teachers, artists . . . pretty much anyone who felt repressed by the clerics and decided to leave. They were around during the revolution back in seventy-nine and then found out they weren’t welcome at the table after the shah fled. In 1981 hundreds of their top members were rounded up and taken to Evin Prison, where Khomeini had them shot. The PMOI is also referred to as the MEK. These guys have been our saving grace in Northern Iraq. Every time the Sunnis get out of line or the Iranians send one of the Badr Brigades into the area to cause trouble, we call in the MEK and they make the problem go away.”

So, what was once a terrorist organization, disarmed, is now an ally, fully operational on our behalf in Iraq, and potentially helpful in the effort to corner Iran and arrest its nuclear ambitions. Just this little slice of the picture illustrates how complex the world has become, a world made even more complex by the rapidity of change.

In the face of numerous reports that Iran has:

>tested nuclear weaponry,
>tested delivery systems,
>enriched sufficient stockpiles of uranium to develop weapons, and
>made it clear they will use nukes to attack Israel and the U.S.,

it becomes all the more critical we find ways to neutralize this threat, even though the military options are limited, and most scenarios are unacceptable.

President Elect Obama has said he will meet with Ahmadinejad without pre-conditions, and he just nominated Clinton to be Secretary of State, a woman who insists on pre-conditions, so we might be looking at some form of executive gridlock right out of the gate. Ahmadinejad, as usual, is all over the map with the vitriol and the sword rattling, rebuking Obama while urging him to negotiate right away. And the word from inside Iran is the real power brokers are pretty much fed up with Ahmadinejad.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s Mubarak says of the Iranian government, “The Persians are trying to devour the Arab states.”

And this from IBD:

“Let us hope President-elect Obama and Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton know enough history to realize that when it comes to nuclear war, an ounce of prevention is worth millions of innocent lives — Muslim and Jewish alike.”

Furthermore, from the same IBD editorial, it is asserted the Obama may have concluded a nuclear Iran is a foregone conclusion: “But this week the Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted a U.S. source who said the incoming president will offer the Jewish state a ‘nuclear umbrella’ against Iranian attack. Some might think that good news, but it would mean the U.S. officially accepting the inevitability of an atomic Tehran.”

With Obama, Clinton, expatriate Iranians (MEK/PMOI), the Bush Administration, the Egyptians and many other Arab leaders increasingly alarmed about the Iranian time bomb, it is beyond rational understanding why so many on the Left continue to apologize for the Thugs in Tehran.

And then there’s Pakistan . . .
