Government Pursuit of LtCol Chessani Continues
ANN ARBOR, MI – Nearly four years after the so-called “Haditha Massacre,” an investigation conducted by over 65 NCIS agents (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) ─ the largest investigation in that agency’s history ─ with the expenditure of millions of taxpayer dollars, and prosecution losses at every stage of the criminal process, the government has decided to give up on the criminal prosecution against Marine LtCol Jeffrey Chessani. Nonetheless, the battle for this loyal Marine officer continues.
On Friday, August 28, 2009, the new general in charge of LtCol Chessani’s case, Marine LtGen George Flynn, Commanding General of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, VA, decided that criminal charges were not warranted. Instead, he ordered LtCol Chessani to face an administrative procedure called a “Board of Inquiry.” [see order here]
[Insight from a retired Marine Corps. officer]
“Old men sitting in Washington without any real experience and understanding of the combat environment, ask young men to make spit second decisions that will either kill others or get themselves killed. Historically, these young heroes have done a remarkable job, balancing mission, safety of their comrades and themselves, with the humane concern for non-combatants. If our politicians (in and out of the military) continue to try to prosecute those who have to deal with these kinds of “life and death” incidents, they are going to soon find themselves without an all volunteer force. The first and most devastating exodus will be the leaders who bear the brunt of broader responsibility. If they don’t back up their troops, they won’t have their loyalty and commitment to carry out the mission. If they don’t kowtow to the politicians (both in and out of the military,) they risk their careers. It is not a system that would encourage a warrior mentality and career in the current armed services. Thank God for people like Jeffrey Chessani, who not only understand what needs to be done, but have the courage to do it, in spite of the consequences. I like the way the ancient Greeks fought – with the king in the front rank. If we adopted Greek rules, I’ll bet we could quickly purge the political class of the effete, self-serving assholes now fighting each other for the spotlight and serially bungling the governing of our country.”

“Our warrior ethos has been severely diminishing for decades, maybe centuries. In our lifetimes we watched the progression of World War II and studied the soldiering of the Germans, Russians and Japanese; they were warriors. Because of our overwhelming industrial might and production capacity we won the war with civilian draftees and patriotic volunteer kids led by World War One veterans. We had more PXs than the Germans had tanks; more USO shows, more hospitals and unlimited supplies.
The Chinese and North Koreans were warriors. We damn near were annihilated militarily but held on until the diplomats agreed with each other to stop the fighting.
I need not expound on Vietnam.
Because of such things as Project 100,000, attempting to diversify the services with racial “balance”, social engineering women, gays, contract civilians, etc. we have diluted our ability to fight and win. Lawyers at nearly every level of command to advise upon, and sometimes approve, command action is totally ridiculous.
Chessani is a victim; any of us could have become victims many times, no doubt. In reviewing my career, I know I could have. So long as we have the current liberal mentality affecting the education of our young people, and a government that does not consider national defense the number one priority and uses the Armed Forces for purposes other than intended, this country will remain in danger so great that we may no longer be the land of the free and the home of the brave in just a few years.”
