Uncertainty is a killer in a recession. Recovery depends in large measure on a growing sense of optimism. As community banks fail and unemployment increases, people have a hard time feeling hopeful. When they see their government bailout the fat cats and spend their tax money wantonly, hopelessness turns to rage. This is not the change they bargained for. They feel duped.
